Cyber attacks are no longer a problem only for big corporations. Ransomware attacks in Europe rose by more than 55% in the first months of 2026, and smaller firms are increasingly targeted because their defences are often weaker. A single compromised laptop can be enough, as the record €5.7bn Binance heist showed, a reminder of how organised cybercriminal networks have become.
For small and medium-sized businesses, cyber security has become a board-level issue, a shift we explore in our guide to building business resilience. The good news is that powerful protection is now affordable. These are ten of the leading tools.
1. Microsoft Defender for Business
Built for companies with up to 300 users, Defender for Business brings enterprise-grade endpoint protection to smaller firms. It is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, making it a cost-effective choice for organisations already using Microsoft.

Subscribe2. CrowdStrike Falcon Go
CrowdStrike’s Falcon Go packages the company’s well-known endpoint protection for small businesses. It uses AI to detect and stop threats such as ransomware in real time, backed by one of the most respected names in cyber security.
3. SentinelOne Singularity
SentinelOne’s Singularity platform uses AI to detect, block and automatically roll back attacks on laptops, servers and cloud systems. Its automated response is valuable for smaller firms without large security teams.
4. Sophos Intercept X
UK-based Sophos is a long-standing favourite with SMEs. Intercept X offers strong anti-ransomware protection, and Sophos’s managed detection and response service gives smaller firms access to round-the-clock expert monitoring.
5. ESET PROTECT
Slovakia-based ESET offers lightweight, well-regarded protection that runs efficiently on older hardware. Its PROTECT platform lets small IT teams manage security across devices from a single console.
6. Bitdefender GravityZone
Romania-based Bitdefender’s GravityZone consistently performs well in independent tests. It combines antivirus, risk analysis and patch management, offering strong protection at a competitive price for growing businesses.
7. 1Password Business
Weak and reused passwords remain one of the biggest causes of breaches. 1Password Business gives staff a secure way to store and share passwords, with admin controls and alerts for compromised credentials.
8. Proofpoint Essentials
Most attacks start with an email. Proofpoint Essentials filters phishing, malware and spam for smaller businesses, using the same threat intelligence that protects many of the world’s largest companies.
9. Cloudflare Zero Trust
Cloudflare’s Zero Trust platform secures remote access to company apps and blocks dangerous websites, replacing traditional VPNs. Its free tier for small teams makes it an accessible starting point.
10. Malwarebytes ThreatDown
Malwarebytes’ business range, ThreatDown, offers simple, effective protection designed for organisations with limited IT resources. It is easy to deploy and manage, making it popular with small firms.
How to Choose
Cover the basics first: endpoint protection, email filtering, a password manager and multi-factor authentication. Then train staff, because most attacks exploit people rather than technology. Regulation is tightening too, with rules such as NIS2 raising expectations on businesses across Europe.
Where I Land
No tool can make a business completely safe, but the right combination makes it a much harder target. SMEs don’t need enterprise budgets to be well protected; they need the basics done well and staff who know what to look for. As AI changes how attackers work, and Microsoft reshapes its workforce around AI, the threat will only grow. Preparation, not luck, decides who recovers. Europe is also building its own security champions, as ChapsVision’s rise shows.
