In recent years, Software as a Service, SaaS, has literally exploded as an industry and the market is continually growing. There is money to be made, and plenty of it, but you are probably wondering if you have what it takes. Perhaps you are heavy on the technical side and are an expert coder. Maybe you are an entrepreneur with an interest in starting a SaaS company because you have heard how lucrative they can be. In either case, your aim is high. You aren’t interested in simply building a company; your goal is to start a successful SaaS business. Here is some of what you’ll need to know to get you headed in the right direction.

Understand Exactly What SaaS Is

Many times, SaaS companies are started by entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the market. They know that Software as a Service is in high demand but aren’t exactly sure what it is and why it’s so much in demand. Perhaps the best way to understand SaaS is to think about all those web-based apps you’ve grown so accustomed to. You know what software is because in your day you’ve loaded tons of it onto your local hard drive. However, SaaS eliminates the need to do that because the software resides in the Cloud. It’s located on a remote server, which the user accesses to run the program. There is nothing to load onto a local computer.

Problems, Problems, Problems

While many SaaS companies have made huge profits, others never really took off out of the gate. Why is that? The answer is simple really. Any salesperson can tell you that the easiest way to sell anything whatsoever is to answer a need or to solve a problem that customer/consumer is dealing with. That’s where you start if you want to build a successful company. Take the time to research the market you are interested in and identify some key problems that have yet to be resolved. Now you can start building a SaaS platform that will address the problem or need you’ve identified.

Reasons to Calculate the Net Worth of Your Company

Whenever starting a new business, projecting the future net worth, value, of a business model is of prime importance if you will need financing or investors. You may also want to learn some common formulas in valuation, within which customer acquisition is a key metric. Investors will look at how you intent to acquire your customer base if there is a market for the platform you will be developing. If you can identify a market then funding will be easier to obtain.

A Cautionary Word to Entrepreneurs

Unlike so many other businesses, today’s entrepreneur can start with little or no knowledge of the industry, companies that deal in technology are a bit different. To start a SaaS company you obviously need software and if you are not a developer, you’ll need to contract one who can develop a cloud-based program designed to answer the need or problem you’ve identified. Here is where it pays to be overly cautious. Make sure you have a rock-solid contract drawn up in which you will be the owner of the intellectual property being developed. Whether you negotiate price with a developer or combine shares in the business with cash payments, it’s important to have that contract drawn up.

You can start a successful SaaS company if you identify problems to solve, focus on customer acquisition, and ensure that your intellectual rights are protected. It’s an amazing service for any customer who doesn’t want to deal with running programs on a local hard drive. Now it’s up to you to sell it!
