Finding high-quality, cost-effective childcare can be extremely challenging for working families today due to a range of factors including COVID-19, staffing issues, nursery closures and a reduction in the number of childcare providers in the UK. With the childcare sector crying out for new growth, there has never been a better time to start your own childminding business – but what can you do to get your venture off the ground?

Register as a childminder

Firstly, you will be required to register as a childminder with either Ofsted or an appropriate childcare agency if you’ll be looking after children under the age of 8 for more than 2 hours per day in your own home and getting paid for your services. While you may not need to register if you’re a nanny, tutor, babysitter or family friend, ensure that you read up on the rules and register your services as necessary – failing to do this could see you receive a fine and be disqualified from childminding in the future.

Ensure your business meets requirements

Depending on your registration status, you’ll have to make sure that your business meets legal standards and requirements; if you’re registered with Ofsted on the Early Years register, you must ensure that your childminding business adheres to all of the early years foundation stage framework standards – if you’re registered on the Childcare Register, you will need to meet the voluntary/compulsory childcare register requirements. This could include modifying your home or hiring appropriate support staff.

Differentiate your services from the competition

In the same way that accommodating flexible hours and low prices will make your business stand out from the competition, adding a niche to your business can go a long way in attracting extra custom when the time comes to start promoting and marketing. Whether you choose to use your skills and qualifications to provide extra school tuition for the kids in your care or even teach them how to play a musical instrument (remember to get music instrument insurance to avoid damage), differentiating your childminding services in some way is essential if you want your business to stand out from the crowd.

Set convenient hours and reasonable prices

Once your business is ship-shape and good to go, it’s time to consider pricing and operating hours. Do market research in the local area and try to set prices that are affordable and competitive; be as flexible as possible when setting hours and remember that many working families may need childcare outside of normal business hours – if possible, try to offer childcare services for key workers or those who work night shifts. This will enable you to reach a wider base of customers and provide affordable childcare to those most in need.
