Learning to drive as a teenager is a hugely valuable experience and one of the first steps into adulthood. Buying a car as a young person is a major decision and you will find that priorities tend to differ for younger generations in the car buying process compared to older and more experienced motorists. So, what are some of the key considerations for a young person buying an automobile?

Price, Fuel Efficiency & Safety

Research shows that younger generations in the UK prioritise the price of the vehicle first and foremost followed by fuel efficiency and then car safety. This is no surprise as most younger people will be limited in terms of cost and the need to find an affordable vehicle, especially if they are not getting financial support from a parent. This is also linked to fuel efficiency as this will have a major impact on running costs, plus younger generations tend to be eco-aware and will want to keep their impact down. According to this research, safety comes in third place in the UK and it shows that young people in the UK are more safety driven than people in Italy and France.

The Used Car Market

As money is such a major factor in the car buying process for younger generations, it is no surprise that the vast majority will go straight into the used car market. The used car market can be a great place to find a high-quality car for an affordable price and you can get more for your money. For instance, you can find used Audis that will keep costs down without compromising on safety features.

Online Research

The same research mentioned above also reveals that 68% of millennials will personally research models online rather than trust a specific dealer. The internet has made it much easier for motorists to research their options and younger generations will always make the most out of the internet.

Consulting Online Reviews

Following this, younger generations will also seek out reviews when choosing a car. Online reviews act as social proof for a business and also give people a better idea of what to expect.

Word-of-Mouth

Along with online reviews, younger generations will also trust the opinion of family members and friends when it comes to choosing a car. It is thought that word-of-mouth generates around 13% of all sales.

Brand Reputation

Brand reputation is also a major factor and younger consumers will always gravitate toward brands that are known to be reliable, trustworthy and ethical and this reflects in their final buying decisions.

It is clear that younger generations have their priorities straight when it comes to buying a car and there are a handful of factors that are considered to find the right car for their needs.
