If you’re working long hours, juggling tight deadlines and feeling under constant pressure, you’re far from alone.
Around 776,000 UK workers reported suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2023/24, according to the Health and Safety Executive.
When you’re in that perpetual “go-go-go” mode, taking a short break can really help.

SubscribeTake a look at our tips below for booking a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway at short notice.
- Choose a short-haul destination
Going somewhere with a short flight time means less travel fatigue and more time unwinding.
From the UK you have plenty of options: think Mediterranean beaches, Alpine escapes or European city breaks.
For example, destinations like the Costa del Sol (about three hours from the UK) and Mallorca (around 2.5–3 hours) are easily accessible.
Or go for a city break to the likes of Paris (just over an hour away).
- Look for last-minute deals
Because you’re not planning a lengthy escape, you can capitalise on spontaneity.
There are plenty of excellent last-minute holidays that offer great value for money.
Consider travelling mid-week and check package deals, which could drop in price closer to the departure date.
If you can be flexible with airports, dates and times, you may benefit from great savings, avoiding the premium pricing of peak travel.
- Pack light
Packing light helps reduce the stress of packing and means you’re not dragging heavy bags through airports.
If you can stick to hand luggage only, you’ll skip baggage-queues and additional fees when flying.
Focus on essentials tailored to your destination. If it’s a beach break, include swimwear, SPF, a hat and sunglasses. If it’s a winter escape or mountain retreat, think warm layers, a waterproof jacket and walking shoes.
- Book relaxing activities
You’re going away to recharge, so make sure the activities you book support that goal.
Instead of a rigid schedule packed with must-see spots, prioritise rest and low-key pleasures.
Consider a spa session with a massage, a beach day with a book, a gentle hike with scenic views or lazy café stops and people-watching.
If you’re in a city break mood, pick a boutique hotel with a good bar or a rooftop pool where you can relax after sightseeing.
Even one or two deliberately unstructured afternoons can make the difference between a busy break and a genuinely restorative one.
Taking a short getaway is a smart move for anyone with a busy career. Even a long weekend can reset your mental batteries, boost your mood and help you return to work with renewed energy.
So go ahead and book that break – you deserve the downtime.
