Unfortunately, theft is part and parcel of owning a retail business. You’re in a position where it’s easy for people to steal from your company. All it takes is one swift motion to pocket a product, and a thief can be on their way. It’s impossible to eradicate theft from a retail store as you simply can’t stay on top of everything all the time. However, you can take measures to ensure that the rate of theft is as low as possible. This is critical if you want your business to survive and be profitable!
Below, you’ll find a few suggestions on how you can minimize and deal with theft in your retail environment:

SubscribeProper security protocols
You need proper security protocols to ensure nobody steals from your business. Effectively, this refers to your security system and the in-house security team. Every retail environment needs a high-quality CCTV system that can see all areas of the store. This includes the main shopping areas, as well as in the stockroom. You should have at least one security guard to stand at the entrance/exit and watch people come and go. In larger retail stores, you have a security team managing the cameras at all times, sending messages to the in-house security if they spot
suspicious activities. You can’t afford this if you have a small business, so make do with one security officer!
Secure your pallets
A lot of theft happens when people are unloading products onto shelves. Here, you have pallets full of products that can easily be swiped by a passing customer. This is very easy to prevent by using security roll pallets. Now, you basically have a cage around the products, stopping people from getting them. So, your staff can turn their backs to stock shelves without worrying about things being taken. Also, this prevents products from falling off pallets and being lost.
Attach security tags to your most valuable products
Clearly, you can’t attach security tags to every single item. This would be perfect as you could prevent all theft this way! Security tags work by setting off an alarm when they pass through the security scanners at the exit to your store. Your customers need to get them removed by a special tool that your employees have. Therefore, the only way to get out of the store without setting the alarm off is by paying for the item and having the tag removed. It costs too much and slows down your store to have these tags on everything. Instead, put them on your most valuable items. At the very least, this stops your most expensive products from being stolen.
The issue with theft is that it eats into your profits. When things get stolen, you lose money, but you also create an admin headache. Your stock doesn’t add up correctly, meaning you have to figure out what’s missing and why. If you want to run a productive and profitable retail business, you have to be proactive in your approach to theft.
