As artificial intelligence becomes embedded across supply chains, decision systems, and everyday operations, the conversation around ethical AI is becoming louder but not necessarily more meaningful. 

For many organisations, ethics is discussed as a branding exercise or a compliance checkbox rather than a serious examination of how AI reshapes human responsibility.

That gap is where many AI strategies quietly fail.

Magdalena Wallhoff, an artificial intelligence expert who began her career in global food production before advising AI startups in Silicon Valley and Switzerland, argues that the most important ethical questions are often the ones companies avoid. 

Her entry into AI was not academic or theoretical. It emerged from the practical realities of warehouses, cold storage, and food distribution systems, where optimisation decisions directly affect people, livelihoods, and access to resources. What she observed was not a lack of technical ambition, but a lack of honest reflection about consequences.

The Problem With “Ethical AI” as a Buzzword

In industry settings, ethical AI is often discussed at a high level, framed around optimistic outcomes and future benefits. According to Wallhoff, this framing creates a dangerous imbalance. 

Organisations are comfortable describing how AI could improve efficiency, reduce waste, or increase fairness, but far less willing to confront what could go wrong.

The issue is not that optimism is misplaced. It is that it is incomplete.

Ethics, in practice, requires grappling with trade-offs. AI systems amplify both human virtues and human vices. They can improve decision-making at scale, but they can also entrench biases, erode accountability, or encourage the abdication of judgement. 

When companies avoid these uncomfortable conversations, they are not being neutral. They are choosing silence over responsibility.

Wallhoff points out that fear-driven narratives are just as unhelpful as utopian ones. Catastrophic predictions distract from the real, immediate risks that arise when AI is deployed without clear guardrails. 

What is needed instead is a grounded discussion of scenarios: what could go right, what could go wrong, and what conditions are required for positive outcomes to prevail.

The Myth of Inevitable Progress

One of the most persistent myths surrounding AI adoption is the idea that technological progress is inherently positive. History shows that humans adapt remarkably well to change, but adaptation always comes with loss as well as gain. Automation alters how people work, how decisions are made, and how value is defined.

According to Wallhoff, the danger lies in assuming that progress does not require active stewardship. Some aspects of humanity require deliberate preservation. Critical thinking, moral judgement, and individual responsibility do not automatically survive automation. If organisations allow AI systems to replace human deliberation rather than support it, they risk hollowing out the very capabilities they depend on.

This is not an argument against AI. It is an argument against passivity.

AI should serve human goals, not replace human agency. When organisations treat AI outputs as unquestionable, they are not gaining efficiency. They are surrendering accountability.

Why Ethical AI Is an Operational Issue, Not a Philosophical One

Ethical considerations are often dismissed as abstract or philosophical. In reality, they surface in operational decisions every day. Who is accountable when an AI-driven recommendation causes harm. How are trade-offs evaluated when efficiency conflicts with fairness. Where does human judgement remain essential.

Wallhoff emphasises that ethical responsibility does not belong only to executives, technologists, or regulators. It extends to individuals across organisations. Every role influences how systems are designed, deployed, and trusted.

The most effective AI strategies recognise this interconnectedness. Agriculture, technology, philosophy, and governance are not separate domains. Decisions made in one ripple through the others. Organisations that acknowledge this complexity are better positioned to deploy AI responsibly and sustainably.

Ethics Begins With Engagement, Not Compliance

The strongest takeaway from Wallhoff’s work is that ethical AI begins with engagement. It requires organisations to ask where they are going, whether they want to go there, and what they might lose along the way. These questions cannot be outsourced to frameworks or policies alone.

They demand active participation from humans who care about the systems they build.

When ethics is treated as an ongoing conversation rather than a static rulebook, AI becomes a tool that enhances human capability instead of diminishing it. That shift does not slow innovation. It makes it durable.
