In Athens, a morning at the Acropolis leaves time for lunch in Plaka. On Naxos, a beach afternoon can end with dinner near the fishing boats. Across Greece, one trip can mean a city break or a week by the sea. You can choose your own pace without filling every day with excursions.
The Bank of Greece recorded 28.5 million inbound travellers in January–August 2026, up 10 per cent. Around 3.4 million came from the UK during that period. Those figures help explain the continuing demand for holidays in Greece. But the real attraction is how easily you can plan around your interests.
You Can Find a Different Holiday on Each Island
Greece rewards travellers who choose an island for its character rather than its fame. Crete suits longer trips because its towns and beaches are spread across a large area. You could stay in Chania and walk around its Venetian harbour after dinner. Spend another day visiting Knossos near Heraklion, but allow time for the journey between cities. Choosing one side of Crete for your first visit can reduce long days on the road.

SubscribeRhodes gives you historic streets close to seaside resorts. The medieval old town is worth exploring before the midday heat builds. In Lindos, the walk up to the acropolis passes through a village of white houses. Take drinking water because the uphill section can be tiring in summer.
Corfu has a different setting with wooded hills and Venetian buildings. Its old town is ideal for an evening wander after your beach visit. Around Paleokastritsa, the shore has coves and rocky swimming spots.
If you prefer a smaller island base, try Naxos. Agios Prokopios is popular for its sandy beach, while Halki makes an interesting inland excursion. Choosing the right island is wiser than visiting five in one week.
Beaches Are Easy to Pair With Everyday Life
Not everyone wants the same sort of beach day. Families may prefer shallow water with places to eat nearby. Other travellers enjoy a quiet cove reached after a short walk.
The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature announced 624 Blue Flag beaches in Greece for 2026. Crete accounted for 154 of those awards across the island. The scheme assesses water quality alongside beach management and facilities.
On Naxos, Agios Georgios is close to the main town and has shallow water. Lefkada has dramatic beaches, although some involve long stairways down to the shore. In Crete, Elafonisi is popular for its shallow lagoon and protected landscape.
Check the access route before travelling with a pushchair or older relatives. Blue Flag status does not tell you if a beach has sand or pebbles. If you want sunbeds, ask about rental prices before settling down for the afternoon. For Greece beach holidays, a short walk from your room might be worth more than a famous photograph.
The Past Is Part of an Ordinary Day Out
Greek history is easy to discover beyond formal museum visits. Athens has ancient monuments beside cafés and shopping streets. Book a timed ticket for the Acropolis and visit before the heat builds. Afterwards, walk through Plaka or spend time in the Acropolis Museum.
UNESCO currently lists 21 World Heritage properties across Greece. They include the Acropolis and the medieval town of Rhodes. You can fit history into a trip without spending every day sightseeing.
The mainland offers interesting options beyond the capital city of Athens. Nafplio has waterfront restaurants beneath Palamidi Fortress and beaches within a short drive. At Arvanitia, you can walk from the old town to the shore. It works well for travellers who want a seaside base without arranging island ferries. For a short stay in Athens, the metro is easier than renting a car.
Lunch Can Be as Memorable as the Excursions
Greek meals give you a reason to step away from the hotel buffet. Order grilled fish beside a harbour or choose a bakery for breakfast. You can try spanakopita when you need something quick between stops.
Regional dishes also give you an excuse to try new places. Crete is known for dakos, made with barley rusks and tomatoes. Naxos produces potatoes and local cheeses, which feature on village menus. On Corfu, ask about pastitsada, a pasta dish served with spiced meat sauce.
An evening taverna meal need not involve an expensive waterfront table. Walk one street inland and check menus before choosing your restaurant. Ask about bread or cover charges if you are keeping a spending budget. Sharing a few starters can also give your group several dishes to try. Save your bigger restaurant budget for one evening rather than spending heavily at every lunch.
Travelling Outside High Summer Gives You More Choice
July and August bring busy beaches and higher demand for accommodation. Late May or June can be better for walking around historic towns. September is worth considering if swimming is a priority.
Your plans should reflect differences between the larger and smaller islands. Some smaller destinations reduce ferry services and seasonal opening hours as autumn progresses. Crete and Rhodes have towns to explore beyond the main beach resorts. A rainy afternoon need not mean losing an entire day of your holiday. Check which local museums or covered markets remain open when you travel.
For holidays to Greece, compare the total journey rather than airfare alone. An inexpensive island flight may require a costly transfer or an overnight connection. Check luggage rules and the final ferry before paying for separate tickets.
The Cost Can Suit Different Holiday Plans
You can choose a self-catering flat and shop at neighbourhood markets. Alternatively, a package hotel may suit families who want meals arranged in advance. Compare both options using the same travel dates and baggage allowance.
A base near the beach could save daily taxi fares. Local buses can help on popular islands, although timetables change with the season. A rental car is useful for inland villages but unnecessary for some waterfront towns.
Among Greece holiday destinations, the best choice is the one that matches your daily plans. Leave space for a slow breakfast or another swim before dinner. It is easy to see why travellers return when every visit offers a different way to spend the week.
