The world is suffering a major pandemic right now, the result of which has meant that as well as many people losing their lives, others have had their lives turned upside-down. Many people have lost their jobs or been furloughed, meaning that they cannot work for the time being. While this is a stressful and worrying time, what it has done is given people time to think about what they want. Perhaps once the world returns to some state of new normality then maybe it’s time for a new career. This lockdown and time off work could be the perfect time to decide what you want from your job and prepare yourself to go and get it as soon as you can. Times like this can put things into perspective and make you realise what is important to you in your life. Rather than looking for money and a great title, here are some things you should consider when choosing a new career path.

Your Happiness

It may sound cliché, but your happiness should be the number one thing that you should consider when choosing a career. There is no point being unhappy and bored; you should pursue something you’re interested in. Many paths could make you happy so try exploring what does.

What are the risks?

The sound of a particular new career may tick all the boxes for you, have you considered the risks too. For example, you might decide to become a truck driver because you like the long hours, the money’s right, there’s flexibility, and you love driving and travelling. However, make sure you have considered that there are more risks as you’ll be travelling and you may find yourself needing representation for truck accident. Make sure you weigh up the pros and cons so that you go into it with your eyes wide open.

Your Work Style

Some people enjoy deadlines and structure, while others thrive with little guidance or management. Make sure the career path that you choose is right for you and aligns with your specific style. Whether you want to work for someone or start your own business, it’s easy to make it enjoyable.

Your Priorities

Make a list of your top priorities and think about how will you achieve a work-life balance and what is most important to you as this could save you a lot of time and money in the future.

Transferability

Does this new career provide you with skills that can be transferable to other jobs? Or is it in an industry which means there is an opportunity to work in other countries? It’s nice to have options, so having a job which you can do anywhere can be useful.

Are there jobs in this field?

There’s no point training for a new career if it’s something that you won’t be able to get a job in. It’s essential to choose something that there is a demand for and something you know that you’ll be able to find work in and make a living.
