The Pareto principle states that 80% of the results your business achieves, come from 20% of the tasks you do. What that means is there is a whopping 80% that don’t actually have any measurable effect on your business. Which begs the question, why bother doing them?
In fact, it is this very question that you need to ask of all the things your business does. Then if there is no legitimate reason why such things are taking up time, effort, and employee, they need to be abolished.Of course, you may come across tasks that need to be done for everything else to be completed. Although, if this is the case, outsourcing such responsibilities to someone else can be the solution. The reason being that this will allow your employees to focus on only what is critical, which is a much more efficient way to run.
In fact, an excellent example of this are the companies that offer Oil and Gas Procurement and Logistics services to those in the power industry. Something that allows them to get on with the job of mining coal and gas, without having to worry about all the tools, equipment, and materials they need to keep running.
Do automate
Next, where possible automate tasks to make them even faster. Something that will reduce the amount of time spent doing them and so how much they cost to complete. This includes areas like lifecycle management, day to day tasks, and so much more.
Additionally automating tasks can help eliminate human error as well, this being something that can affect the quality as well as the efficiency of the work. Something that makes automation a double win for any business that initiates it.
Do minimize employee distractions.
Finally, don’t forget that a great deal of inefficiency in the workplace is caused by unnecessary employee distractions. Although, before you start yelling at people to close Facebook, it’s not only these things that are the biggest problem.
In fact, often it is when the company themselves are encouraging poor and inefficient working practices, including requiring workers to answer emails straight away. After all, this is something that takes focus from what they are doing.
Additionally, not encouraging employers to batch similar tasks is a very inefficient way to run a business, and will waste a great deal of both time and money. To that end, ensuring your working policies facilitate efficiency is one of the most important things a business can do to improve in this area.
