A lot has changed in the last few years and how we work looks very different for many sectors and industries. Many businesses are now operating completely remotely while others have created a hybrid model that allows employees to work from the office some days and at home on others.

With more of us chopping and changing our place of work from one day to the next, it’s more important than ever that we have a robust, fully functioning IT system. If you’re a manager or business owner, it might seem like the pressure’s on to make sure your team is kitted out with everything they need and that you have an IT department that can jump in and help when things don’t go to plan.

If you’re trying to keep on top of your IT systems, read on for some tips that will ensure everyone can get online and work at their est.

Why focus on IT?

Even if things seem to be running smoothly, it’s important that you set aside time to make sure everything is operating as it should. For instance, if you issued staff with laptops at the start of the pandemic, you might need to double check the warranties and ensure updates are in place.

Why this focus on IT? If your team members suddenly find that they can’t get online or that their software isn’t right for the task they’re working on, they can’t do their jobs, slowing things down. This affects productivity and this, in turn, impacts on your profit margins.

This applies across the board too, whether you’re looking at laptops or desktop computers and monitors that stay in the office.

How to oversee IT

First up, invest in good quality equipment. Newer laptops and computers might seem costly, but by buying the best now, you’re less likely to lose more money when cheaper models break or become faulty after a short time period.

Also, make sure you have access to an IT expert who can help if things go wrong. If you run a larger company, you’ll have an IT team in place, but if you run a smaller enterprise, look into hiring a freelance or contract professional who is on hand when you need them.

Get the hardware and software you need

As well as having the best laptops and computers, ensure your hardware is in place. Budget for monitors, computer mice, and devices with the necessary USB connections. These peripherals go hand in hand with other computing equipment and ensure staff can get on wit the job without any IT hiccups.

In terms of software, make sure everything is up to date. Consider what might be needed and update as needed.

Focus on the connection

While the Wi-Fi connection at home is out of your hands, you can take control of the connection in the office. Super-fast broadband that can withstand a lot of traffic when you have most of your team in the office is essential. Shop around and find a good business deal that works for your organisation.
