Thanks to the accessibility of the internet, just about anyone can register a limited company, hire a premises, employ some staff, set up a website, get insurances in place and pretty much tackle any job involved in getting set up if they have enough money to begin with. However, just because you can set up a company doesn’t mean that you should- not everyone is cut out for running their own business. Here are some skills that company owners need to have- if you’re lacking in some areas then taking courses or more education could build them up before you start out on your venture.

Many people start businesses because they see themselves as leaders rather than followers. These tend to be people who can feel stifled and frustrated making someone else’s dream come true and being the one taking orders from higher ups. However, leadership isn’t about being a dictator, being bossy or assuming you’re better than others or even being the loudest person in the room- far from it. Natural leadership gives people confidence in you, it makes them want to follow and take direction. If you feel as though you have natural leadership skills then starting your own business might really suit you. Take a leadership course to give you more information on how to manage people, which will allow you to elevate your natural skills.

 

Ability to delegate

Part of leadership is delegation– being able to assign authority to others so they can manage each area of your business. Don’t try to do it all alone or assume you can, a successful company can be likened to a finely tuned machine. Each part has a job to do, which contributes to the overall functioning. Delegating means you trust others to do their job and the overall ‘machine’ runs without a hitch. It’s not to say you shouldn’t have authority over your staff, provide guidance and advice where needed. But micromanaging isn’t helpful, it increases stress levels and can actually reduce productivity.

 

Organisation

As a company owner, you’re responsible for keeping a lot of plates spinning. And the only real way to do that is to be organised throughout the whole of your personal and professional life. It means sticking to a routine, being organised with dates and appointments. It involves everything from utilising the right software to keep data organised, to using plastic bins and organisers in your office to keep stock and materials organised. 

 

Communication

Finally, communication is everything in business. From communicating with staff to customers to clients, you need to be able to express yourself in the right way. Take some public speaking courses and practice your networking skills as a way to boost this before starting your venture.
