A basic induction needs to be carried out whenever there is an arrival. This is essential, as it reminds merchandisers of the safety procedures they need to follow.

What should you include in each store induction? Signing into the store, the types of fire extinguishers used, the location of the fire extinguishers, the fire and emergency procedures that must be followed, the assembly point, the escape routes, First Aid facilities, welfare facilities, and safety responsibilities.

Of course, there may be specific instructions for certain people, for example, those involved in logistics may be using pallet racking systems, which require further instruction and safety.

Competency Register

At the start of every project, all details regarding safe working systems and risk assessments must be logged onto the Competency Register. Team leaders must brief all those working on the project, so they are aware of the procedures in place.

Presentation

The company dress code must be adhered to at all times. The purpose of this dress code is to ensure safety while also improving overall image. Safety boots are required at all times, and you may also need to wear other forms of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as Hi-Vis clothing and a hard hat, when working on certain projects – your team leader will advise you on when this is necessary. Smart combat style trousers and polo shirts or sweatshirts must be worn, as well as your validation card and name badge.

All merchandisers must maintain high standards of personal hygiene and come to work appropriately dressed, which includes wearing clean and suitable clothing. You should also make sure you avoid wearing any fashion headwear or face jewellery, such as long earrings, eyebrow studs, lip rings and nose studs. If you have long hair, please tie this back to ensure it does not get in your way while working. These points are all crucial in order to maintain health and safety standards. You also should not need to be reminded that turning up to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not permitted, and will result in serious consequences.

Housekeeping

You should never overlook the importance of housekeeping at your business. The majority of accidents actually occur because of poor housekeeping. One of the most important rules to follow is cleaning up as you go, and you must ensure that your working areas are tidy at all times and free of any obstructions.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health / COSHH

It is imperative to abide by the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations that are in place. These regulations apply to all of the cleaning fluids and chemicals that are used in the workplace. When the likes of garden chemicals and cleaning products are yet to be open, they do not pose much of a threat, however, the risk intensifies if the package has been damaged or a spillage has occurred. In such instances, it is vital to notify your Team Leader straight away.
