Presentation matters in business. A business owner, you most likely pay close attention to how you dress and carry yourself when meeting customers for the first time, and you must make sure that your store or offices do the same. Setting the scene is how you make your first impression on them, and here are a few tips that can ensure you’re making the right impression with the right setting.

Don’t be afraid to stand out

The impression you make starts on the street. Or in the shopping centre, or wherever else your store’s entrance might be. Winning foot traffic into your store and convincing customers to take that first step is important. For that reason, it’s worth investing in high-quality and highly visible signage. If your store is on the side of the road, this might even include investing in lit signage that can draw the attention of drivers.

Give your products pride of place

Your products are just as much a part of the design of the store as anything else, even if their stocks regularly change. The art of using them to draw attention to the store and as a marketing tool is known as visual merchandising. Putting your newest and most visually impressive products first, be they in the window or in displays throughout the store can communicate your offerings to the customer, as well as helping them navigate towards relevant items and areas of the store.

Choose materials that suit the spirit of the brand

It’s not just the aesthetic of the decor that will influence how people interact with your brand. The very materials you use in the store will evoke different feelings, as well. For instance, resin flooring has a professional and prestigious “showroom floor” feeling that other materials don’t. Other stores that are going for more a homey, natural look might instead use hardwoods throughout to reinforce that feeling. If you’re renovating your store, pay close attention to what the materials you’re using communicate.

Make the store echo your brand identity

Good use of your branding can help leave an emotional and atmospheric impression on your customers that becomes hard to get rid of. It builds recognition that can then lead to reputation and trust. Subtle means to market your brand in-store can help you work towards that end.

Rely on more than one sense

Visuals play a big role in setting the scene of the store, but if you want to create the most immersive experience, then it’s worth tapping into the other senses as well. Fitting store music (without lyrics) can help customers pass the time without even noticing. Furthermore, using retail aromatherapy to create pleasant smells can make the store all the more welcoming, as well. Some stores might even find value in installing a coffee machine to tap into the sense of taste, too.

If you haven’t done so, it’s worth taking the time to look over the presentation of your storefront or office’s welcoming space. If you think your customers come in on the wrong foot, it could be behind it.
