There are challenges that have to be faced when you run any kind of business, but if yours sells physical products then you have an additional thing to consider (compared with those selling services or digital items, for example). You have to think about how you will manufacture, store and ship the items to your customer’s homes which can be quite a complex chain of events. Here’s what you need to know.

Will you manufacture them yourself by setting up your own plant, or hire a third party company to do this for you? Alternatively, will you purchase wholesale items that are already being produced and sell these for a profit? They’re all things to consider when you’re starting up your business.
Storage and Warehousing
When you sell stock or physical items you need space for them to be stored before shipping them out to customers. Chances are you’ll need a warehouse unit, and ideally it should be close to your manufacturing plant if you have one to avoid having to make lots of delivery trips (which will cost you money in fuel and truck drivers). Everything needs to be stored safely, if you’re using crates of stacked pallets for example then pallet racking inspections will need to be completed to make sure they meet standards.
Packaging
To ensure products arrive safely without getting damaged in transit, you’ll of course need to ensure they’re correctly and securely packaged. Packing materials is a cost that’s easy to overlook, but everything from padded envelopes to boxes of styrofoam beads will have a cost. Consider the right packing materials for you, this will depend on the size, shape and material of the item as well as if it’s going overseas. Picking and packing can be a huge task, so if you don’t have the space or resources then consider hiring a third party company to deal with this for you.
Shipping
The last leg of the journey is the item leaving your warehouse and reaching your customer, so you need the right method to deliver to them. In some cases, the postal service could be the way to go, especially if the items are smaller or lighter. You’re able to book regular business collections with the postal service, who then collect items from your business for you rather than having to wait at the post office. If you sell larger items then a courier delivery company would be the way to go. Many now have features which allow customers to track their parcel in real time on a map as well as provide up to date information about when it will be delivered. This means there’s no longer a need for customers to wait in all day for a parcel, making it convenient for them which reflects well on your company.
