When Decisions Define the Game

The modern game is one that’s often defined by player freedom. Whether this means a distinct, narrative choice – such as getting a say in which direction the story goes in – or freedom to simply explore whatever part of the world you want at any given time, they both add to variety in tailored experiences. A game is unlikely to offer much through repeat-playthroughs if every time you go back the experience is identical to what it was before.

Decisions in gaming are something that are easy to think of in only one way, the narrative kind. However, it’s important to recognize how many small decisions you make in any given game.

Role-Playing Games

The first port of call for many people who are looking for games in which your decisions matter will likely be role-playing games (RPGs). That might refer to video games, but it might also refer to a more traditional form of this kind of game – pen and paper games with friends in the form of Dungeons and Dragons. This is much more work, but one could also argue that in a video game that has to have parameters designed by developers, your choices are always going to be limited in one way or another. However, when it comes to pen and paper role-playing, there is much more freedom to create scenarios and allow choices to play out with spontaneity and imagination picking up the slack.

Casino Games

Decision-making is a key part of subgenre of games found in casinos or on platforms like Jackpot City Casino. Whether you’re playing poker, blackjack, roulette, or any of the many slot variants found here like Bridesmaids or Lucky Shot, there will be decisions that impact the result – something that might sound strange when you’re used to these games being referred to as luck based. However, you have a direct hand in how that luck plays out. When you choose to stop the reel or when you decide to increase your bet, those are decisions that will impact the outcome, meaning that these seemingly small decisions that you make can have an enormous impact on the outcome.

Consequences Through Gameplay

Sometimes, narrative choice is condensed into a single moment – do you save the city or take it over for yourself? However, when there are games which put much more emphasis on the moment-to-moment gameplay, the choices become embedded at that level as well.

Tetris, a game that’s considered foundational for the medium, is a prime example of this. Whether you’re playing the oldest version around or the newest, the principle is the same – where do you put the block? Your answer to that question is going to impact the answers available to you when that question is immediately asked again. It’s cause and effect in action, every move that you make is one that you make under pressure, but those moves will either open up new opportunities or close doors to you as you continue to play the game.
