There has been an increased enforcement regarding the regulations about the use of mobility scooters in Benidorm in recent times. This has come about after complaints regarding reckless driving, particularly those using them for non-medical purposes. It will come, if prosecuted, with a £425 fine.

Benidorm is a very popular destination for UK travellers, some 600,000 visitors in 2024, but these complaints, where sometimes device users were seen to be travelling at 30-40 mph, has resulted in police vigilance to be on the increase.

Infringements could be speeding, careless driving or carrying other passengers. It is the case that wherever you are, mobility scooters are designed for people with walking difficulties, or who are over 55 and have a definite disability.

Something to do when hiring or using your scooter is to take out insurance, namely a public liability certificate, covering 60,000 Euros. If you are renting a mobility scooter, the cost of this insurance is usually part of the hire price.

Insurance can offer vital protection as if you are found to be responsible after a scooter-related accident, then you may be liable for compensation, repairs or medical bills, while if you are injured through no fault of your own, you will need cover to pay for your own treatment. All hire companies in Benidorm are required to provide third-party liability insurance to pay for any damage to other vehicles, property or roads.

It is now customary in Benidorm for fines to be issued to anyone riding a mobility scooter who does not have a permit.

With reference to speed of travel, the use of mobility scooter on pavements require you to travel at no more than 4mph. Class 3 devices are allowed to be used on roads and have a limit placed on them of 8mph. In some other regions, it is sometimes allowed to travel at speeds up to 12mph, but you must wear a helmet.

While riding a mobility scooter you must follow the road traffic signs including traffic signals and one-way signs. It is not advised to use a mobility device to replace having to hire a taxi to go clubbing on the island as this against the rules in the first place and drink-driving rules will apply if you are caught by the police.

When operating a Class 3 scooter there are specific regulations, namely that your device should have two separately functioning brakes. There are weight restrictions too with a limit, unloaded, of 150kg and if you are carrying medical supplies then a limit of 200 kg is lawful.

Lights are required, more so at night but also if you are travelling by road.  Front and rear lights are necessary and so too are reflectors, while directional indicators acting as a means of hazard warning lights in a potential emergency are compulsory. An audible horn is also mandatory, and a rearview mirror must also be in place.

These conditions are determined to make your holiday a joyful one and also one that will provide many happy memories.
